LinkedIn LogoAs the LinkedIn boom continues to hit the business world it seems that almost every serious company has taken to having their employees open up an account for themselves. While many companies have taken the time to create LinkedIn accounts and group pages for their companies, few utilize this resource to its full potential. LinkedIn provides highly targeted we traffic that has a professional tone to it, but what most businesses do not realize is that this tool should not be used as a “one size fits all” business tool. What an employee in your sales department uses the network for does not necessarily coincide with what your team of developers should be doing.

For example, an employee that deals mainly with sales would first use LinkedIn to seek out potential clients, make contact with them, and then do some research on that person and company before going to a face to face meeting with them. This allows for the sales person to gather some insight into the history of the company and person, as well as find some common similarities that might exist between. Getting this first initial look before the meeting provides a definite advantage that otherwise would not have been possible had the sales person not properly utilized their social networking before attending the meeting.

Moving onto the developer that we previously mentioned, he would most likely focus less on meeting and communicating directly with potential customers, and more on keeping up with current industry trends, and helping to promote the company that he works for. The great thing about LinkedIn business groups is that they allow anyone who is a member to share information, opinions and ideas that all revolve around a common topic or theme. This would be a great chance for the developer to join some groups that deal with development relevant to the industry that he works in, and share and take away information as to what is happening within other similar companies. This also can allow as a way to promote his current company by posting helpful links and articles tied to his current company’s websites helping promote further online.
